Prevalence and Risk Factors of Osteoporosis and Osteopenia in Korean Women : Cross-sectional Study

Abstract

|
Objectives: This cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence and the risk factors of osteoporosis and osteopenia among middle-aged Korean women.
Methods: We recruited a total of 2,123 women aged 40 years and older in four rural and one urban area. The bone mineral densities in calcaneus and distal radius were measured by a portable dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (pDXA). Two hundred and ninety three women aged 20∼39 years who participated in a regular health check-up were used as a reference population. Osteoporosis and osteopenia were defined by WHO criteria. Information on potential risk factors for osteoporosis was collected by an interviewer- administered standardized questionnaire. The Odds ratios (ORs) of risk factors were calculated by unconditional polychotomous logistic regression models.
Results: The standardized prevalence of osteoporosis of 40 years or more was 22.5% for calcaneus and 14.8% for distal radius using the Korean population of year 2000 as a standard population. The standardized radius. Alcohol consumption (≤1/month vs. never, ＞1/month vs. never) was independently protective factor for osteopenia and osteoporosis of both calcaneous and distal radius and higher education level and early age of menarche were significantly related to a risk of osteoporosis of calcaneous.
Conclusion: The prevalence of osteoporosis and osteopenia in Korean women was similar to those in other Asians but higher than those in Caucasians. Older age, lower weight and menopause were three major risk factors for osteoporosis and osteopenia among Korean women.
